SYCS Summer Concert - The Best of British
Southampton Youth Concert Sinfonia presented their final concert of the season – a Best of British celebration, featuring music from across Britain’s classical, film and stage culture. Repertoire ranged from Walton and Elgar to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Downton Abbey, and closed with a traditional ‘Last Night of the Proms’ finale, led by soprano soloist Alison Lewis.

Pyramid Concert 2017
Acorn & Elgar Strings, SYS, SYCS and SYO Pyramid Concert
A unique chance to hear all the string orchestras in ascending order showcasing their skills, culminating in the top of the tier Southampton Youth Orchestra.
- Acorn Strings played a selection from String Time by Kathy and David Blackwell.
- Elgar Strings played "William Tell" by Rossini, "Yesterday" by Lennon & McCartney, "Mystery Mansion" by David R.Bellwood and "Big Ben Boogie" by Loreta Finn.
- Southampton Youth Strings played a Mendelssohn Suite including the "Wedding March", "Nocturne" and "The Fairies Dance", followed by music from "Wicked" by Stephen Schwartz.
- The concert then featured a guest appearance by the excellent Southampton Youth Brass Band playing "Death or Glory" by R.B Hall, "Abide with me" by W.H Monk, and "Prismatic Light" by Alan Fernie.
- After the interval, Southampton Youth Concert Sinfonia played the hugely entertaining and interactive"We're Going on a Bear Hunt" by Ian Stephens.
- Southampton Youth Orchestra played the 2nd Polovtsian Dance from "Prince Igor" by Alexander Borodin and "Finlandia" by Jean Sibelius.

Fantastic performance with solos by Abi Caveney in Phantom of the Opera and Matthew McDermott in The Firebird. Also there was great fun with We're going on a Bear Hunt.

SYO Concert with cellist Jamal Aliyev
Southampton Youth Orchestra's first concert of the 2016/17 season.
They were joined by Jamal Aliyev one of the most exciting young cellists of his generation. This evening's programme was:
- Slbelius - Finlandia
- Dvorak - Cello concerto
- Brahms - Symphony No 1
They began their programme in the Scandinavian majesty of Silbelius' Finlandia. Then Dvorak took us to his Czech homeland, but whistfully remembering it from America where he wrote this extraordinary work. Then finally Brahms' first symphonic work, a work it took him 10 years to write, plagued with self-doubt, brought this concert to a glorious finale.

SYO Leavers Concert and farewell concert for Jane Higgins
From time to time, SYO players move on to new challenges. This special concert is held each year so that we can say farewell and to celebrate their hard work and dedication to the orchestra over the years.
This year is extra special and sad as we say farewell to Jane Higgins who has been with the SYO for 28 years, for 12 of which she has been the conductor. This evening's programme was:
- Overture Romeo and Juliet - Tchaikovsky
- Pictures at an Exhibition - Mussorgsky (just Baba Yaga and Great Gate)
- Overture Merry Wives of Windsor - Nicolai
- Premiere Rhapsodie for clarinet and orchestra - Debussy
- Symphony No 7 in C# minor - Prokofiev. 1st and 4th movements only.

Music For Youth 2016
Music for Youth is a national music education charity providing free access to performance and audience opportunities for young musicians across the UK through its annual season of festivals and concerts. In July each year, 10,000 young musicians gather in Birmingham for the incredible five day NATIONAL FESTIVAL. This is their opportunity to share their achievements, hear other young musicians from across the country, to compare notes and for some, to engage in a bit of friendly rivalry.
The SYO were selected and travelled up to Birmingham to perform in this special event.

Sounds from the Stadium
THOUSANDS of children joined together for a spectacular mass concert at one of the South Coast's biggest football stadiums.
Nearly 3,500 youngsters from across the region crowded into St Mary's Stadium in Southampton for the huge Sounds From The Stadium event led by prominent pop and classical music icons.
Electric string trio Cordelectra and CJ Edwards from the Voice led the youngsters through vocal, percussion and instrumental performances in an event hosted by Southampton Music Hub.
Restless Symphony - from Gareth Malone's the Naked Choir - Southampton Youth Orchestra and Fionna Jepson were also at the concert which included musical tastes ranging from "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit and "I Got Bills" by LunchMoney Lewis.
Proceeds were donated to Southampton Hospital Charity's to the Maternity echo machine fund.

The European Union Chamber Orchestra and Members of Southampton Youth Orchestra joined forces!
The renowned EUCO’s programme opened with Grieg’s ever-popular "From Holberg's Time" Suite in Olden Style, Op 40 and included the fourth of Mozart’s five concertos for violin, written when the composer was 19. Esteemed violinist Tasmin Little joined the orchestra as soloist whilst Jane Wells’ new work Two wings and a prayer incorporated solo roles for young virtuosos from SYO alongside the orchestra’s members. The programme ended with Haydn’s playful Symphony No 55 in E flat, Hob I/55 Schoolmaster.

A massed choir performance of Vivaldi's Gloria
Southampton Music Hub and Richard Taunton's Sixth Form College (RTSFC) presented a massed performance featuring over 200 singers from secondary schools, colleges and community choirs across Southampton including:RTSFC Community Choir, St Anne’s Catholic School, Bitterne Park Secondary School, St George’s Catholic College, The Sholing Technology College, Upper Shirley High, Soton Voce, Southampton Gospel Choir, Delicious Sounds, Southampton Youth Orchestra players and the City of Southampton Orchestra. The programme also included excerpts from Handel's Messiah and Bach's Double Violin Concerto.

SYO performed in the Czech Republic
Following the success of their Music For Youth Festival appearance, Southampton Youth Orchestra took off for a four concert residential in Prague. The venues included Jablonec nad Nasou, the Czech Museum of Music in Prague, the Colonnades in Marianske Lazne and the Meteda Beseda Concert Hall in Pilsen. Congratulations to them for showing Southampton's great talent overseas.
